Mentors for Young Offenders

Aim of the project

The Young Offenders Mentoring Project aims to increase confidence for young offenders to be self sufficient through increasing their practical and soft skill sets and help them re-integrate into society as active citizens in hope of also reducing the likelihood of reoffending. .

This phase of the project focuses specifically on the mentoring of young offenders within the 18-26 age group and female prior to release from their custodial sentences.

Please note that the young offenders who put their hand up to be part of this programme volunteer to do so, therefore will have a willingness to change, learn and improve.

Mandatory requirements to be a mentor

The mentoring process would start approximately 3-6 months prior to the individual's release and would continue for up to twelve months after release. Mentors:

• must undertake a reference and DBS check before being able to fully participate;

• at a minimum, undertake both trauma and safeguarding training;

• be dedicated to meet the mentee at least twice a month for approximately an hour per session (video or in person); and

• keep a logs for each session to capture the progression of the individual and provide feedback for the purposes of evaluating this service and its effectiveness.

 All DBS checks, training and travel costs will be covered by Youth Mix.
